Fun hanging out with like minded people
So many cool organizations represented; Fraser Health, Arocha, Brown girl’s upcycled treasures, Chilliwack Buddhists, Regen BC, Class heating, PrairieCoast John Deer (with an awesome $10K electric mower) Water wealth, Cultus Lack Aquatic Sustainment society, University of the Fraser Valley and many more.
Folks teaching sustainable growing, folks helping to protect natural areas in danger of the encroachment of shortsighted development, Rotary fixing and mending things, Rotary talking about their Environmental Sustainment Action group.
Mary’s Power Kitchen feeding us high quality food.
Folks from Agassiz, Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Surrey, Vancouver, Ferndale Washington. Even someone visiting from Detroit Michigan. So many great people learning together, engaging with folks who want to learn more and helping each other to shift from “knowing” to “acting”.
There was a recognition that the valley is “hard”. References to entrenched beliefs in the area resulting in lower tolerance/acceptance of others & new ideas. Resistance to taking responsibility for listening to science and taking responsibility. Don’t get me wrong. Lots of great people in the valley. (we’re here too!) But interesting to see that many participants see Agassiz, Chilliwack and Abbotsford as resisting progress rather than embracing or leading progress.
If you are (still) reading this and this bothers you. Lets all work together in a healthy way to help our neighbours listen to the science to understand how positive collaborative action can help our area move forward with less pollution, better affordability, better disaster preparedness, greater awareness, greater openness and love for each other.
Loved the welcome and introductions from Elder Eddie from Squah First Nation and Mayor Ken Popkum. Both of whom have been here for the preceding 2 years. Good support from the TOP makes a big difference.
Next year the Rotary Climate Fair will move to a different area, and the plan today is that it will be picked up by Rotary South Surrey. Thanks to Robyn Curtis for her steadfast leadership and countless hours of dedicated service to work with Rotary and others to produce a truly unique and very necessary point of connection for the community and service groups around climate change.
We’ve had fun. Met lots of great people. Had heart to heart conversations with lots of folks about why climate change matters to them. This year we’re going to work to partner more with partners. To boost what they are doing.
Thanks to our 72 members who agree with the premise of our work to education individuals, businesses and governments about climate change and how to stop it. Thanks even more to our members and others who are committing to learning more, having real conversations about things that matter and acting to stop climate change.
