Pledge That your next hot water heater will be electric.
Did you know that heating water accounts for 19.3% of the energy used in a Canadian home? By simply choosing an electric water heater, you could reduce your carbon footprint by almost a fifth.
When it’s time to replace your water heater, go electric! Both gas and electric heaters do the same job, and their manufacturing impact is similar, but how they operate is very different. In BC, where 97% of our electricity is renewable, electric water heaters produce almost no pollution, unlike gas heaters, which release CO₂ and other pollutants with every use.
Electric heaters mean guilt-free warm showers—while gas heaters pollute the air and contribute to climate change with every hot shower.
To prepare, you might need an electrician to install higher-amperage wiring. Or consider a heat pump water heater, which uses air to heat water and even provides a little cooling in summer.
Why take a pledge? Studies show people are seven times more likely to follow through if they make a commitment. Here’s a chance to set your intention and be ready to say, “Make it electric,” when it’s time to replace your water heater. Let’s make your hot water use part of the solution to climate change.
My Pledge: I commit that my next hot water heater will be electric. (Or, I’ve already switched to electric, and I’m not going back to gas.)
